About Us

After broad consultation and involvement of Muslim scholars, academic experts, education leaders, business and social partners, The Guardian Institute (TGI) was established as a Curriculum Provider in 2021. This was in response to:

the duality of curricula in Muslim schools which has created a gulf between revealed and acquired knowledge; and

the unprecedented challenges confronted by Muslim youth due to the absence of Islamic values, traditions and the inclusion of subliminal messages conveyed in the prescribed school curriculum.

As a consequence of the aforementioned challenges, TGI embarked on a twofold process.

Developing an Islamised CAPS curriculum

  • TGI, through its Learner Books and Teacher Guides, prepared by subject experts has ensured that the process of teaching and learning glorifies our Creator. Thus, the Islamisation of the curriculum is a reflection “of the unity of all creation and the marvellous connections and patterns in Allah’s creation”.
  • The Islamised Learner Books, Teacher Guides and Formative Assessments have been written to align with the Curriculum Assessment Policy Statement (CAPS). In preparing the Islamised curriculum, care and due diligence was given to what learners need to know cognitively and be able to do at different grade levels. The goal of the curriculum is for learners to see connections of Islam in everything they do and learn which TGI believes would eventually benefit them in the decisions they take and the life they live.
  • The main feature of the Islamised curriculum is to develop the holistic personality, nurture the innate inclination of tawhid and individual needs of learners, embed moral values based on Islam and develop in learners a quest for acquiring knowledge to apply in their day-to-day life as well as for the life in the hereafter.

Developing an Al-Birr seies of books for Arabic subjects

  • The Al-Birr Series has been developed to complement and strengthen the Islamised CAPS curriculum.
  • The name Al-Birr means righteousness. We therefore believe that learners who interact with the Al-Birr Series of books will develop to become righteous, Allah-conscious, and confident Muslims.
  • The developed books are authentic, stimulating, learner friendly and learner centred. Emphasis is placed on understanding and the application of information as presented in the different books.

TGI is also cognisant that “great teachers” will struggle with poor curricula and “great curricula” will not be carried out by poor teachers. It is with this in mind that TGI has built in professional development (pre- and in-service training) for mediators of the curriculum (i.e., those who would be teaching the curriculum).

Purpose

STATEMENT

To develop a curriculum based on Quran and Sunnah for the sole pleasure of Allah Subḥānahu wa-taʿālā.

Vision

STATEMENT

“To produce a “world-class”, holistic, confident and contributing Muslim living the Quran and authentic Sunnah, seeking Allah’s pleasure and mercy for the attainment of Jannah”.

Guiding Principles

All knowledge must be acquired in the name of Allah and for the sake of Allah.

Education is a religious obligation as inferred in the Surah Al-Alaq.

Education in Islam is a lifelong process, from the cradle to the grave.

Knowledge consists of ‘Revealed Knowledge’ and ‘Acquired Knowledge’. The key being the Sacred and Divine.

Belief in the Oneness of Allah and the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is the final messenger.

All Muslims should be provided with equal educational opportunities irrespective of race and socio-economic status.
